Each dog is an individual. Patience and a few extra days, if necessary, will pay off!

Training is the most important part of the entire system.

DogWatch of Western Mass. asks that you read the owners manual and if you have any questions during the training process, please call us at 866-394-3647

  • Never allow you dog to be unattended or unleashed with the receiver/collar on during training.

  • Have your dog "sit" in your home (we usually suggest you have your dog to sit by the door that will be used when the dog exits and enters the house).

  • Using the words: "collar on", place the collar on your dog, so that the words DogWatch on the receiver can be read when looking at your dog.

  • Leave the collar on for approximately 15 minutes before the training begins.

  • Leaving your dog in the house, place the flags in the driveway.

  • Go back into the house, attach the green lead to your dogs collar, and go out to begin the training.

  • Following the instructions you were given at the initial training, keep it light, using lots of praise, moving in the same direction in the boundary area.

  • When correcting the dog from entering the avoidance zone use the words: WATCH OUT ! and give a tug on the leash, retreat to the safety zone- with lots of praise.

  • Flick or shake the flags as you train - as necessary.

  • Keep the training sessions to 15 minutes- twice daily.

  • When you are done training, play and praise, return to the house.

  • Once again, inside by the door, have your dog sit, and remove the collar, using the words: "collar off".

Following the outlined training procedures in the manual, you may test your dog with a correction on day 3 from the initial training date, and then begin ‘distractions’ after day 5, depending on your dog and the progress. IF your dog does not want to readily enter the avoidance zone:

  • Do not force it... It has the right idea!

  • If by chance your dog becomes afraid of the flags or hesitant in the training process, again; relax and do not force it. As you dog expands it’s comfort level, it will relax.

  • When the training schedule is complete, the collar may stay on for the day- however, please remove the collar at night!

  • Check periodically the fit of the collar.

  • Not too loose, not too tight: a well fitting collar works just right!

  • A loose collar will not make the necessary connection for a correction.

  • An overly tight collar can cause irritation- you can place a finger between the post and the dogs neck. If you cannot fit your finger in this area, the collar is too tight.
